Rick Fraser’s track record of 1:13.58 is safe, but early in the 39th Grande Prairie Stompede Westerose’s Troy Dorchester is acting like he wants to break the mark set in 2011.
Dorchester, grandson of famed chuckwagon driver Tommy Dorchester, steamed around the Evergreen Park oval in 1:15.73 on Thursday night and has taken over the lead in the World Professional Chuckwagon Association season opening event.
He sits at 2:32.45 after two nights and took over first night leader Jason Glass, who is just hoofsteps away at 2:32.75. Gary Gorst is third at 2:33.83.
If Dorchester continues to improve by almost a second a night – he was 1:16.72 on opening night Wednesday – Fraser’s track record could fall by the end of the five-day Stompede on Sunday.
Some Grande Prairie drivers are still well in the hunt after two days.
Mark Sutherland is fourth at 2:33.83 followed by his dad, Kelly, in fifth at 2:34.38 while Kirk Sutherland is 12 at 2:35.49 and Mike Vigen 13th at 2:35.56.
Chanse Vigen, Mike’s son, has an outside chance at a final four sitting 21st at 2:36.17 while Mitch Sutherland is 26th at 2:37.44 and Fraser well out out if in 28th at 2:38.43.
In the Pro Tour wagons Lee Adamson leads the way at 2:228 followed by Keith Wood at 2:30.73 and Garry Thiel at 2:30.82.
