He was almost four seconds slower than opening night, but fast enough to keep the lead after two days of World Professional Chuckwagon Association competition at the 40th Grande Prairie Stompede on Thursday.
Layne MacGillivray and his Cascade wagon toured the Evergreen Park oval at Gordon Badger Stadium in 1:20.02 and 14th overall on the night, but he still clings to a lead of over a second heading into Friday’s action.
MacGillivray has a two-day time of 2:36.41 while Layne Bremner and his Sundown Oilfield horses sit in second at 2:37.50 and Obrey Motowylo and the H&E Oilfield steeds are third at 2:37.56.
Local fans will be happy to see three of their boys are in the top 10, led by The Captain, Kirk Sutherland and the EMCO Corp wagon in fifth at 2:38.24. Rick Fraser, who GP’ers claim as one of theirs even though he moved south a few years ago, is in eighth with the Terra Core wagon at 2:39.48 and veteran Mike Vigen, with 30 years behind the reins, is ninth with his Keddies Tack & Western Wear rig at 2:39.71.
And how is that battle between grandpa, son and grandson going?
After the first night you young one, grandson Dayton Sutherland, was sitting high in the seat after finishing four spots up on dad Mark Sutherland and five ahead of grandpa Kelly Sutherland.
A bit of a different story on Thursday.
Dayton was the 33rd best wagon of 36 on Day 2 and is now in 23rd place (2:43.60) with the JP Outpost rig while grandpa rolled his CIMS Corp rig in at No. 17 Thursday and is 17th overall (2:41.48) while dad Mark was 15th on the night and 16th overall with his Nordic Energy outfit at 2:41.28.
On the rodeo side Randy Carlise of Athens, LA leads the Brandt Tractor Tie Down Roping at 7.9; Matt Richardson is tops in Chinook Scaffolding Steer Wrestling at 5.1; first in Elite Vac & Tank Team Roping is the combo of Riley Wilson of Cardston and Clay Ullery of Two Hills at 4.8; Michelle McLeod of Whisboro, TX tops GP Chrysler Ladies Barrels at 15.761; best Norlan Chrysler Saddle Bronc rider is Laine Watt of Okotoks at 84; JDA Bull Riding is led by Beau Hill of West Glacier, MT with an 83.5; and Clint Laye of Cadogan is tops in TNT Tank Rentals Bareback at 86.5.
